What COSC certifies
COSC is Switzerland's Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Its mechanical wristwatch chronometer certification is based on ISO 3159 criteria; movements are tested in multiple positions and temperatures over a defined period. COSC also describes certification categories and procedures for instruments beyond mechanical wristwatches.
A COSC certificate supports a defined precision claim. It does not certify every aspect of a watch's construction, durability or magnetic resistance, and certification is not a promise against future changes from wear or damage.
What METAS Master Chronometer means
METAS Master Chronometer is a separate certification framework associated with testing a finished watch against published requirements that include precision and performance under specified conditions. The scheme has been used by participating watchmakers, notably Omega. Always consult the current METAS material and the brand's documents for the exact tested model and criteria.
Do not treat a marketing phrase as a full specification. Confirm whether the claim applies to the finished watch, which tests are included and which version of the certification applies.
How to compare the claims
Start with the official certification body. Compare the object tested, test duration, positions, temperatures, allowed rate variation and additional tests such as magnetic exposure or water resistance. Standards can change, so use the certification body's current description rather than a forum summary.
A certificate may be meaningful evidence of a manufacturer's quality process, but it cannot answer every ownership question. Service network, legibility, fit, build quality and the specific movement remain relevant.
What certification cannot tell you
Certification cannot predict how a watch will perform after years of wear, a hard impact, magnet exposure beyond its tested conditions or poor service. It does not make a watch maintenance-free, waterproof for every activity or more valuable by default.
If precision matters most, compare the maker's stated tolerance and warranty policy and ask how rate is assessed in service. Evaluate certifications as one part of a broader specification, not as a single ranking of watches.
